چکیده

Almtract--1. Properties of hemoglobins in the blood of the salamanders Cryptobranchus alleganiensis, Necturus maculosus and Hynobius tsuensis were examined by starch gel electrophoresis and peptide mapping. 2. Multiple hemoglobin components were found in individual specimens of N. maculosus and H. tsuensis, but a single component was observed in C. alleganiemis. 3. Sedimentation coefficients of 4"8 S were found for the N. maculosus and C. alleganiensis hemoglobins. 4. Cryptobranchus hemolysates exhibited a relatively low oxygen affinity, a Hill constant of 2"7 and an absence of a Bohr effect at pH near neutrality whereas N. maculosus hemolysates showed a higher oxygen affinity, a Hill constant of 1.7 and a Bohr effect.

Cloacae, Cloacal Glands and Female Sperm Storage in Giant Salamanders

Most of the 620+ species of salamanders are relatively small animals, rarely exceeding 200 mm total length, but members of the families Cryptobranchidae (1800 mm), Sirenidae (978 mm), Amphiumidae (1162 mm), Proteidae (486 mm) and Dicamptodontidae (351 mm) can truly be considered "giant salamanders." These families have few species (Proteidae with six species is the most speciose) and are aquati...

Higher-level salamander relationships and divergence dates inferred from complete mitochondrial genomes.

Phylogenetic relationships among the salamander families have been difficult to resolve, largely because the window of time in which major lineages diverged was very short relative to the subsequently long evolutionary history of each family. We present seven new complete mitochondrial genomes representing five salamander families that have no or few mitogenome records in GenBank in order to as...

Comparative Anatomy and Phylogeny of the Cloacae of Salamanders (Amphibia: Caudata). II. Cryptobranchidae, Hynobiidae, and Sirenidae

Cloacae were examined from salamanders representing the three families in which fertilization of eggs is known or inferred to occur externally. The cloacae of male and female sirenids are aglandular and lack cilia. Sexual dimorphism in sirenid cloacae occurs only in the extent of epithelial stratification in the cloacal chamber in females (entire chamber) versus males (posterior angle of the ve...

Morphological variation of hypaxial musculature in salamanders (Lissamphibia: caudata).

Despite the acknowledged importance of the locomotory and respiratory functions associated with hypaxial musculature in salamanders, variation in gross morphology of this musculature has not been documented or evaluated within a phylogenetic or ecological context. In this study, we characterize and quantify the morphological variation of lateral hypaxial muscles using phylogenetically and ecolo...

Transcriptional and phylogenetic analysis of five complete ambystomatid salamander mitochondrial genomes.

We report on a study that extended mitochondrial transcript information from a recent EST project to obtain complete mitochondrial genome sequence for 5 tiger salamander complex species (Ambystoma mexicanum, A. t. tigrinum, A. andersoni, A. californiense, and A. dumerilii). We describe, for the first time, aspects of mitochondrial transcription in a representative amphibian, and then use comple...
